Anthony Cottonaro Obituary

Anthony Joseph "Tony" Cottonaro, 94, of Norristown passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, July 1, 2013, at Einstein Montgomery, Norristown, Pennsylvania. Born in Norristown, PA. on October 24, 1918, he was the son of the late Guiseppi and Biagina (Coscia) Cottonaro. Tony attended Norristown High School, and graduated in 1937. Soon after he had enlisted in the Army. Tony was a veteran of World War II, he served as a Staff Sergeant in the 420th Service Squadron for the United States Army Air Corps. During his time with the U.S Army, he graduated from the Officers Candidate School and received many awards and medals for his dedication and service. Tony was a lifelong member of Holy Saviour Church. He was in the hardware business for over 40 years, he was the owner and operator of Cottonaro Hardware in Norristown until his retirement in 1984. He was also a very active member of the Norristown community, he was a 3rd degree member of the John F. Kennedy Assembly of the Knights of Columbus, and a 4th degree member of the Father Joseph C. Tomko Assembly #934 of the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce, the Catholic War Vets, the Norristown American Business Club, the Big Hatter's Club, Plymouth Kiwanis Club, LAM Lodge #306, Valley Forge Chapter 1776 of the Sons of Italy, Overbrook Italian-American Club, Holy Saviour Holy Name Society, Holy Saviour Senior Citizen Club, the PA Hardware Association, and also served as president of the West-End Business Association. One of his life-long projects was fund-raising for all the clubs and organizations to which he belonged. During his lifetime, Tony received many awards and citations, including the Norristown Businessman of the Year, for his service to the Norristown Community. Tony loved to travel and did so quite extensively. He enjoyed sports, the theatre, and Broadway shows. More recently he liked having coffee with his retired friends. Above all else, Tony loved spending time with his family, his family was his utmost pride and joy. In addition to his loving wife Frances (Bono) Cottonaro of 69 years, he is survived by his son; Joseph (Jane) Cottonaro; and his daughter; Bettyann Cottonaro. One brother; Andrew (Rita) Cottonaro; Two grandchildren; Cara (Alessandro) Valentini, and Jill Cottonaro. He is also survived by his great-granddaughter; Stella Valentini, and many nieces, nephews, and brothers & sisters-in-law He was preceded in death by one brother; Epiphanio "Abe" Cottonaro, and sisters; Mary Salamone & Frances Aceto. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in mass cards or to the charity of your choice. Family and friends will be received on Friday July 5, 2013 from 9 - 10:45am at the Holy Saviour Church, 407 E. Main St. Ntn. Pa 19401. Mass will follow at 11:00am. Entombment will take place in the St. Patrick's Cemetery Mausoleum.
