Edward R Long, Sr.

Edward Long Sr., 72, of Lower Pottsgrove Township, PA died after a brief illness on Tuesday, August 30, 2011. Born in Norristown July 22, 1939, he was the husband of the late Mary (Hertzog) Long and son of John E. Long and Margaret O. (Webster) Long. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother H. Gordon Walker; sister Naomi ("Sissy") Long and cousin "Jack" W. Coates. He was a graduate of Norristown Area High School. He was a proud member of the United States Marine Corps, Aviation Ordinance Division, VMF 511. A former Hamilton Street resident, Mr. Long was a knitting machine wireman at Wildman-Jacquard Inc. He was a life member and volunteer firefighter of Hancock Fire Company, Norristown, PA and member of Norristown Maennerchor Club and participated in the dart league for a number of years. He retired after twenty-five years from Upper Merion Township, serving as a Traffic Signal Technician Supervisor. He was a member of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Parish in Limerick and longtime parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Norristown. He was also an avid Philadelphia Phillies baseball fan. Survivors include five children: Joseph (Catherine) Giaimo of Norristown; Donna (Elliot) Harvey of Phoenix, AZ; Michael (Valerie) Long of Limerick Township; Edward (Lynda Grozinski) Long Jr. of Lower Pottsgrove and Sandra (Earl) Metzger of Upper Pottsgrove. Six grandchildren include Edward Long III, Matthew Long, Andrew Long, Rachel Long, Schuyler and Stephanie Metzger. Relatives and friends may call on Thursday, September 1, 2011, 7-9 pm and Friday September 2, 2011, 9:30 - 10:30 am, at the Caramenico FH Inc., Main & Walnut Sts., Norristown with mass at Holy Saviour Church, 407 East Main Street, Norristown, PA at 11 am. Burial to follow at Riverside Cemetery, 200 S. Montgomery Ave., Norristown, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the American Cancer Society, 480 Norristown Rd., Suite 150, Blue Bell, PA 19422.
