Hermann Winkler, 86, of Malvern passed away peacefully on Monday, January 20, 2025, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born March 18, 1938, in Germany, he was the son of the late Herbert Sr., and Frieda Caroline (Troester) Winkler, and the beloved husband of the late Lucy (DiNenna) Winkler.
Hermann believed that a good life was determined by self-reliance and the content of your character, success shaped by your own hand. “You make your own happiness” was his favorite phrase, and he lived that ethos. He and Lucy understood and experienced the world as a big adventure – sometimes sailing in the Caribbean on his sailboat Arcturus (named, he said, after the brightest star in the sky that sailors used to navigate); sometimes on a canoe going down the Amazon River; sometimes driving across the United States for no other reason than to see a new place – always together, always in love with each other, and in a way that most only dare dream about.
His generosity and work ethic were extraordinary. Hermann was the Vice President of Seton Automotive Leather for many years, taking pride in the craft of leather tanning for automobile brands that included Mercedes and Porsche, and, after his retirement, consulting on industrial manufacturing for clients internationally. His home in Malvern became famous for its picnics and dinner parties, which often overflowed with friends and family enjoying full-course, abundant menus he would spend hours preparing, cooking, like sailing, being another great passion.
Hermann Winkler was a unique, life-cherishing force. He will be missed deeply and by many.
Hermann is survived by his son, Herbert; two stepchildren, Danielle Marcoux and Timothy Dailey; grandchildren Joseph Marcoux, Brandon Marcoux and Larissa Romanova; his daughter-in-law Evgenia Romanova; his sister Anneliese Singer; and his nephew, John Singer, his wife Pamela, and their son Emilio.
“Whoever you are,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting –
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.”
― Mary Oliver, Wild Geese
