John Francis Eckert, 94, of Norristown, peacefully passed away at his home on Friday, January 25, 2013. Born October 16, 1918 in Norristown, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Henry and Anna A. (Gallagher) Eckert, and loving husband of the late Dorothy Fennelly Eckert. Mr. Eckert was a life-long parishioner and volunteer of St. Patrick Church, Norristown. He graduated St. Patrick Grade School, Norristown and St. John the Baptist Boys High School, Manayunk. During World War II Mr. Eckert served in the United States Army as a member of the 4th Infantry Division. He was a member of the Catholic War Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign War. His first job was working the Rails Switch on the Pennsylvania Railroad. After the war he began his career at the US Postal Service; initially as a carrier in Norristown and advancing to Supervisor of the King of Prussia Post Office. Upon his retirement Mr. Eckert was employed by TV Guide as the Supervisor of the mail room. He also spent many years employed at Vink's Pharmacy. Survivors include his children: Mary Ann Brown, Susan Foley, Paul Eckert, Gregory Eckert and his wife, Kathleen Dapkus, and Louise Eckert. One sister: Sister Mary Cordelia Eckert RSM; sisters-in-law: Patricia Eckert, Eleanor Kennedy, and Elaine Fennelly; brother-in-law: Samuel Burruano; grandchildren: Lauren Brown, Carey Brown, Daniel Foley, Kathleen Foley, Gareth Eckert, Hadden Eckert, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his son, John J. Eckert, and by seven siblings: Joseph Eckert, Sister Ann Regina Eckert IHM, Clare Burruano, Eleanor Eckert, Paul Eckert, Robert Eckert, and James Eckert. Relatives and friends will be received on Saturday, February 2, 2013 from 9-10:00 A.M. at St. Patrick Church, 714 DeKalb Street, Norristown, Pennsylvania. Mass will follow at 10:00 A.M. Burial will take place at St. Patrick Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests Mass Cards or memorial contributions to be made to St. Patrick Church 714 DeKalb Street Norristown, PA 19401
