Michael S. Vernacchio, Sr. Obituary

Michael S. Vernacchio, Sr. 79, of East Norriton passed away peacefully on Thursday February 20, 2025 at the Bryn Mawr Hospital surrounded by his loving family.  Born on September 23, 1945 in Norristown, he was the son of the late Michael & Josephine (Milito) Vernacchio, and the beloved husband of 53 years to the late Carol (Chinchilli) Vernacchio.

Michael attended Holy Saviour School and would later go on to attend Bishop Kenrick High School and graduate with the class of 1963.  Upon graduation Michael enlisted in the military and served his country proudly as a member of the United States Navy from 1966-1968 where he would earn the National Service Defense Medal. After his service to his country, Michael was drafted by the Chicago Cubs and played in their farm system until he was traded to the Cinncinatti Reds.  Michael worked for many years as a plumber for the Plumbers Union Local 690, as well as 11 years for the Philadelphia Eagles during his time in the plumbers union until his retirement in 2015.  Michael devoted his time to Holy Saviour Parish by serving as the president of the CYO for 10 years and as a lector at Sunday masses. Michael touched many lives through his coaching of football and baseball at Holy Saviour, Bishop Kenrick, Archbishop Kennedy, Kennedy-Kenrick, Harriton High School, Pope John Paul II High School, Montgomery County Community College, Mt. Carmel, Presidential Caterers American Legion, and the Quakertown Blazers. Michael was inducted into the Kennedy-Kenrick Sports Hall of Fame in 2007 as a member of the 1960 undefeated Bishop Kenrick football team. In his spare time Michael loved to travel whenever he had the opportunity. One of his most memorable trips was to Sciacca, Sicily with his wife in 2012. Michael was also an avid golfer, and loved to watch his children and grandchildren play sports, he was an avid fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies, and enjoyed listening to his favorite artists such as Frank Sinatra, Neil Diamond, Frankie Valli, and many more. Michael was also involved in many community groups and organizations such as the MSS Club and the Mount Carmel Lodge where he served as the president for over 20 years.  Michael also worked for over 30 years at Chateau Granieri restaurant and catering hall as a maitre d where he made many memorable moments to newly married couples. Michael was also devoted to his faith and family and cherished the time he was able to spend with them. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and dear friend who will be missed by many.

Michael is survived by his four beloved children, Michele (Michael) Sergio of Ocean City, MD, James (Deanyne) Vernacchio of Collegeville, Michael Jr. (Kimberly) Vernacchio of East Norriton, and David (Stephanie) Vernacchio of Plymouth Meeting. Eleven loving grandchildren, Matthew, Michael, Danielle, Jimmy Jr., Michael III, Elaina, Anthony, Clare, Cara, Frankie, and Charles; One sibling, Theresa (Joseph) Palaia; Sisters-in-law, Donna (John) Powers, Nancy (Stephen) Witman, and Roseanne Vernacchio; Michael is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and beloved wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Anthony Vernacchio.

Family and friends are invited to call on Tuesday February 25, 2025 from 8:30AM - 11:00AM at the Holy Saviour Church, 407 E. Main St. Norristown, PA 19401. A funeral mass will follow the calling time at 11:00AM at the church. Burial with military honors will take place in the St. Patrick's Cemetery, East Norriton.
